UCSB Non–Judgmental Bites
Recent reports
have put Cervin Morris, former UCSB
student body president in the news again. We have been very tough on
Cervin over the past few years. We were the only organzaiton, that I am
aware of, that called for his resignation after he was arrested for a felony
assualt. He had prior alcohol related charges (while under 21) that
involved a vehicle; moreover, eligibility rules were waived so he could run for
A.S. President. We are not going to
jump on Cervin here. I just hope that UCSB stops defending him and execusing his
behavior . UCSB should take action to remove him from school so that he
can work on getting his life on track. Cervin, whatever the problem is, go
get some help before you hurt yourself or some one else, again.
UCSB–Judgmental Bites
To the folks who cry
racism about Cervin's most recent brush with the law, there is a
good reason why the Nexus put Cervin in the news. It is because he puts himself
in the news at every opportunity he gets. He is what is referred to as a
"public figure." Moreover, as a former student body president, and
leader of many protests, he holds himself out as a leader and as a respected member
of the community. That is why it is news when his behavior does not match
the public image he has attempted, with some measure of success, to foist off on
the UCSB public. Actually, it is more likely that UCSB is doing more
foisting than Cervin.
UCSB removed its formal recognition from the fraternity, Sigma Chi, because it had "several egregious violations" of the school's risk management policies.
Risk management? Is that like managing people who commit crimes?
Criminal charges were filed earlier this month against four members of the
fraternity as a result of the alleged hazing incident that occurred on Nov. 16,
2006, when a student, over the age of 21, was hospitalized for alcohol
poisoning. His blood alcohol level as .56–
very close to a fatal overdose. It is alleged that UCSB attempted
to discipline the four students involved (allegedly) by taking action at
the Student Faculty Conduct Committee level. However, the committee was unable
to proceed as a result of the alleged victim’s refusal to cooperate.
Funny, there are police reports, ambulance reports and medical reports.
How is it that the DA was able to proceed? My guess is that this
"committee" wouldn't proceed unless it got demands to do so from the
perpetrators in writing and co-signed by their attorneys. What a
feckless and flaccid excuse for discipline.
Eric Frimpong's trial begins on November 26,
2007. The fifth or sixth year UCSB student (who at last report was STILL
IN SCHOOL AT UCSB) is accused of allegedly raping a woman on an Isla Vista
beach. A second woman has also accused him of a sexual assault.
Expect protests and screeds in the Nexus (again) protesting his
innocence–before
any facts are actually known. Expect racism charges no matter which way
the verdict goes. Our sympathies are, and will continue to remain,
with the victims of sexual assaults–sorry, Eric, being a soccer star just
doesn't matter much when it comes to sexual assualt.
Political Bites
UCSB "clowns" make fools of themselves in CIA
protest. Wow, what an intelligent argument! And how about that free
speech thing? The thing that surprises me is that given the ethos at
UCSB (see Nexus for confirmation of UCSB ethos), why didn't the
protestors send in sluts screaming like porn queens. I bet the CIA
uses hookers more often to get information than it uses
torture.
Respectfully submitted,
